USS Bennington scrapping

The USS Bennington was active in the Pacific during WWII. Comments: I am trying to locate some of the USS Bennington CVA20 B Division shipmates during the years of 1954-1956. In 1970 she was decommissioned. She carried out air strikes on, Japan, the Volcano Islands, and Okinawa and supported the invasion of Okinawa.

USS Bennington (CV/CVA/CVS-20) was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy.The ship was the second US Navy ship to bear the name, and was named for the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington (Vermont).

Several have been found and communciate with each other on a regular bases. Stricken from the Navy list on September 20, 1989, the carrier was sold for scrapping on January 12, 1994. 5 August – Dédalo decommissioned. In 1993, she was sold for scrap metal, then towed across the Pacific to India to be scrapped. Aircraft from the USS Bennington sank the battleship Yamato, the cruiser Yahagi, and four Japanese destroyers while in the Pacific.

25 July – USS Hornet struck, preserved as a museum ship; USS Oriskany struck to be preserved as a museum ship or scrapped. In 1976 she was decommissioned, then sold for scrap and torn down the same year. On 2 September her planes participated in the mass flight over USS Missouri (BB-63) and Tokyo during the surrender ceremonies.

Redesignated as CVA 20 on October 1, 1952, and CVS 20 on June 30, 1959, the BENNINGTON was decommissioned on January 15, 1970. USS Bennington (CV-20) was commissioned in August 1944, weighing 27,100 tons and measuring 872 feet, and able to carry 90 to 100 planes. 1990–1999. 11 November – USS Abraham Lincoln commissioned.

In 1970 she was decommissioned.

Bennington arrived at San Francisco 7 November 1945 and early in March 1946 transited the Panama Canal en route to Norfolk. USS Bennington (CV-20) was commissioned in August 1944, weighing 27,100 tons and measuring 872 feet, and able to carry 90 to 100 planes.
